U Kalicha – a Traditional Czech pub

U Kalicha (meaning "At the Chalice") is a terrific pub for a traditional Czech evening
at reasonable prices. Hungry, thirsty customers will enjoy the all-inclusive menu which
is available in 16 different languages. The menu offers generous portions of no-nonsense
traditional Czech food washed down with one-litre glasses of local beer. This traditional
Czech pub is located on the Mala Strana hilly area below the castle and is the perfect
place to have a beer and rest between sightseeing.
In 1992 the original owners and brothers, Paul and Thomas Topfer - got U Kalicha
back from the State. With their industriousness and willingness, they have restored
the culinary traditions of the Bohemian kitchen. The main dining space seats several
hundred guests and was renovated in the 1930's. The walls are covered with large cartoon
depictions of the literary character Good Soldier Švejk and quotes from Jaroslav Hašek's
book as well as comments and signatures from visitors throughout the years.
Reservations are essential for all diners, as large groups often book the whole
restaurant. U Kalicha has all the elements necessary for a traditional Czech pub
restaurant: hearty, plentiful and savory Czech food; large, frothy cold beer; and lively,
traditional Czech music. This beautiful oasis and meeting place of fine tasters from
all over the world is also perfect for a romantic rendezvous. This unique restaurant
celebrates both legends and historic truths.
